Q: I know that doing special promotions can generate income and I’d like to know if I should create a Black Friday or Cyber Monday promotion?

A:  My answer is, it depends. And, this applies to all holiday promotions. For most mission-driven organizations that I play with, this isn’t in alignment with their values or marketing plan. Can it work? Yes. Do you have to follow the “herd”?  No.

As a general rule of thumb, I don’t jump on the bandwagon of Black Friday sales or Cyber Monday promotions. Instead, I support Giving Tuesday. Here’s why.

As an entrepreneur, it’s important for me to give back and support causes that are making a difference

  1. Kiva microloans.  Giving to Kiva supports women across the globe with microloans that they can pay back in time. Once the microloan is paid back, you have the option to keep, donate, or reinvest your money in another women-led project.  Give here
  2. The WILL Program via United Way of Jackson County. This is a nonprofit dedicated to helping women and girls reach self-sufficiency in Jackson County, Oregon. The funds donated help with a myriad of needs. Consider donating here.
  3. Ride My Road. A nonprofit organization dedicated to ending sex trafficking. Founder and photographer Trantham is a force of nature. She rode her motorcycle across the United States, offering photo sessions to sex trafficking survivors to raise awareness. Ride My Road also hosts motorcycle raffles and events.
