    When I first started my journey into online marketing it was a brand new world for me. That was over 11 years ago.

    What I learned is that all the mentors, copywriters, marketers and “gurus” were teaching the same problem agitate and solve approach to copywriting and creating marketing messages.

    Perhaps you experienced that, too?

    This antiquated approach seemed manipulative and poking at pain points turned me off.

    I was quiet about it. I watched. I listened. I learned. I learned that many people were also turned off by that technique.

    I’ve been teaching a softer approach for years and helping hundreds upon hundreds of clients get better results.

    When clients came to me they were confused, frustrated and burnt out. They didn’t understand why their copy wasn’t working.

    Perhaps some of these statements sound familiar to you?

    “We’ve identified the pain points and no one is buying or sales remain flat”


    “We’re simply not getting the results we were promised”


    “We’re getting the wrong kind of clients” … they’d say.

    I’d ask, “How does focusing on the pain points FEEL to you?”

    They’d reply “It doesn’t feel good.”

    My point exactly. If it doesn’t feel good, it’s probably not good. That’s just common sense (which isn’t always common). If it doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not right.

    So, we’d collaborate. We’d deconstruct what had been taught and we’d focus on solutions that felt good to the soul and were of service. Solutions to help people address their true challenges. Connections to solutions if we were not the right fit. These connections included people, products and resources that otherwise would have been seen as competition.

    Hence the Collaboration Economy. I have declared that we are officially in the Collaboration Economy (and people are the TRUE currency).

    People are not numbers, they shouldn’t be treated as such (I’ll share more on my thoughts about many online list building tactics being like schoolyard bullying at another time). AND as fellow people, we should not be poking at pain points, we should be focusing on passion points.

      Collaboration is something I’m all for, I enjoy it. But it does take training our business owners and workers away from the straight competitive model. I wish this would get integrated more into existing B-schools and entrepreneurial training programs.

      I appreciate your comment. YES, I choose collaboration over competition every day. I’ve been teaching this for many years (since before I started my business over 11 years ago).

      There is a heightened interested in creating lasting, sustainable business relationships and the only way to do that is to collaborate and build relationships.

        Lisa, you make a very good argument in this post. I think people are starting to catch onto the idea of the collaboration economy. I like it because businesses are starting to be more customer-driven and less “one-size-fits-all.”

          There is a shift and I think it’s important to keep sharing ways we can lift each other up and support one another.

          One of my biggest pet peeves is the trend to treat people like numbers. People are not numbers and when you build relationships you get better results. #CollaborationEconomy all the way.

        Focusing on solutions instead of problems is exactly what our world needs. That’s why I say “Stop poking at pain points and start focusing on passion points.” It’s time to paint a picture of how the world and our lives can be when we are of true service to one another instead of trying to get more than our fair share.

      Unfortunately the majority of larger, older businesses tend to view their people in a mass numbers game. Only when forced to address an issue is there a response to conduct a stress management program or some type of training program for employee personal development. Newer businesses created by younger CEO’s tend to have a different approach to their cultures. I hope they stay that way!

      Halleluja, Hannah! (I mean Lisa.) Far too many marketing gurus are simply applying old approaches to new media and, not only is it offensive, it doesn’t work. An e-mail newsletter, for example, should have some… wait for it… news and not be another vehicle for spamming us with ads. Thank you. I needed to read this today.

      I prefer collaboration to competition any day. Most of the help I’ve given and received has been through collaboration of some sort.
