    No More Either/Or

Have you ever found yourself stuck in either/or thinking? Forcing yourself to choose between experiences you truly desire? I’ve blogged about this before — AND instead of either/or scenarios, I highly recommend “AND thinking.”

This train of thought allows you to move past choosing one thing over another so you can create exactly what you want. For example: I’ve created a FREEDOM based lifestyle based on my core values. This means I can work and play anywhere I choose. For 20 years my home base has been in Idaho although I’m originally from California. My SOUL has been yearning for a change and I’ve researched many places that I thought I might want to be. I struggled with the notion of giving up my home in Idaho. So instead of doing the either/or thing, I decided upon an “AND” solution. AND I’ve added another location in Ashland, Oregon. I must admit that Oregon has captured my heart.

    UHaul

    3 States, 640+ miles, 17′ UHaul & I’m where I want to be…                for NOW.

I’m keeping my main home in Idaho and I now have a magic writers condo in Ashland. I packed up my creature comforts in Idaho and drove a 17′ UHaul through 3 states and 640+ miles. I had never driven anything that big and I was scared at first but now I really like the idea of getting an RV to explore even more of the United States (that could be my next AND).

Plus, I like to experience the true grit of life and LOVE seeing new places. Hood River was one of my destinations and it never disappoints. The experience of driving, facing fears and seeing places of true beauty far outweighs any convenience hiring movers would have provided. I prefer to experience new things and if I would have given into fear, I would not have been empowered to consider new adventures.

This reminds me of the conversation that took place on Super Soul Sunday with Oprah Winfrey and India Arie. Their exchange made me realize that as creative beings we are often challenged with TOO many options which triggers fear & worthiness self-talk. We start to question ourselves when really we need to create a life that truly support US without letting negativity and influence of others change our course.

Oprah said “Voices of the world will drown out the voice of God if you let them.”

I know this is true and it was a great reminder to hear it from her.

AND this statement from India Arie touched a chord “I needed to work my way out of comparing myself to other people. Your real job is to be you.”

All of this resonated on a deep level because I have been sharing my philosophy of “Dare not to compare.” This reinforced my belief and message that you (we) must trust your intuition and move forward in a way that creates happiness and joy for YOU.

    1. I love the concept of “AND” thinking, Lisa. It really creates a sense of freedom that doesn’t exist when you’re focused only on “either or.” It sounds like you had an amazing experience traveling to Oregon!

        Tiffany,

I did have a great experience “AND” I am so glad I gave myself that gift. It was very empowering and it’s opened up new avenues for adventure in my life. We truly never know where “AND” thinking will take us.

I love that bought a whole separate house 3 states away for writing! And your message of “Dare not to compare” strikes a chord as well. It’s easy to lose one’s inner voice in our culture and so critical to make time and space for it–sometimes inner clarity is just one breath away!

    3. I’m going to keep choosing “AND” every day thanks Lisa!

        Heidi,

I find that “AND” thinking is really the only way to go. It opens up so many possibilities and moves me past the “stuck” point that is so draining.

I love this! Sometimes I still catch myself thinking I have to choose one or the other. Thanks for the reminder. (And is that you driving the U-Haul? Well played, my friend! :0

        Lisa,

Yes, indeed. I was going to hire a moving company or get someone else to drive but decided to do it myself. VERY empowering and now I’m excited about getting a tricked out Airstream to travel around. 😉 You never know what your “AND” will bring.

        Write on!~

    5. So absolutely perfect Lisa!
So easy to forget when bogged down by “should” or “have to” in life and business. I’m going to do this for myself today!! Thank you for the reminder!

The “either/or” thinking is what has us stay STUCK, don’t you agree? Stuck in Idaho, stuck in a job, stuck in a relationship…I so agree when we replace it with “and”, the options open up tremendously and we don’t feel stuck but instead capable of having exactly what we want – like a writer’s condo in Oregon!

Congrats on your additional home in Oregon 🙂

    6. So with you and using the word AND when looking at choices to really see what’s possible. The road trip sounds wonderful!

    7. Sue Painter says:

I agree with Aprille here, either/or thinking is STUCK thinking. Both/and is much freer and opens opportunities.

    8. Jessica says:

This is awesome Lisa! I’m so happy for you, having your house AND your creative condo! I felt very inspired after reading this!!

    9. Mira Dessy says:

Congratulations on your new place and your adventure. I love the idea of being open to the possibility of AND. I’m going to have to put that on a card where I can see it, “stay open to the possibiity of AND.” Great!

    10. Mitch Tublin says:

      Good for you Lisa,
Nice to see you have made the decision which serves you best.
