    In business just as in our personal lives, it’s important to surround ourselves with like- minded people who support our core values and well being. And if these relationships cross over into both realms of our lives, that’s even better.? Of course it’s important to have healthy boundaries and at the same time, it’s entirely possible to forge lasting friendships and business partnerships.

    I thought it Christina's Visit 1was an appropriate time to blog about this since my dear friend and business colleague Christina Merkley recently dropped by for a visit. I was particularly excited about this because she lives and works in Canada and I hadn’t seen her since September. Not only is Christina a fantastic person she has the coolest graphic coaching business around. I recently completed her home study course and I’m so glad that I did.     It’s interesting that some people choose to keep their personal and business lives completely separate.? For many years I did that very thing. Then I realized business is a lot more fun when you’re working with people you genuinely like all of the time.

    I understand this line of thinking goes against the traditional grain.? I think that’s why it resonates with me so deeply.? For many years I was fed business philosophies chock full of antiquated ideas.? Perhaps you’ve heard some of these misnomers ~

    • All clients are a pain
    • Never mix business and pleasure
    • That’s the way we’ve always done it
    • If you don’t have an office building, your business isn’t a real business

    I could go on but I think you get the point.? More importantly, I hope that you’re not being fed any of this misinformation and if you are, I hope you take a good hard look at the way you’re doing business.?

    I’ve found that life is simply too short to shortchange ourselves in any aspect.?

    If all of your clients are problem clients you’re not aligning yourself with the right people. Perhaps you’re not self employed and you feel like you can’t choose who your clients are? It’s easy to shift blame and stay in the same rut. However, choices are always available, and you can create ideal business partnerships by changing the way you think and interact with others.?

    If the old adage “never mix business and pleasure “still defines your work style, you may want to consider a change.? Because, your work should be fun and if you don’t enjoy what you do, it can greatly affect all aspects of your life .

    If you’re still doing things the same way they’ve always been done just because that’s the way they’ve always been done, I challenge you to break free from pattern thinking and shake things up a bit.? Just because something has worked in the past doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way to do things. Be open to new techniques and information.?

    Finally, and this is one of my favorites.? Just because a business is home-based doesn’t mean the business isn’t lucrative.? There are some antiquated beliefs that insinuate brick and mortar storefronts are the only “real businesses”. I recently had someone ask me when I would be moving my business into a storefront so people would take me seriously. I am seriously making a profit doing things the way that I’m doing them so I had to laugh. Why exactly would I want to incur more costs? Hmmmm!

    My point is the times have changed.? There are new and different and better ways of doing business and managing our personal lives. Ultimately I encourage you to do what feels right for you.?
