Q: Advertising is expensive and I want more people to know about my business. How can I get business publicity (especially FREE publicity)?  This question, along with many more, was posed during my workshop, The Power of Publicity, at Southern Oregon University’s Small Business Development Center. Savvy business owners understand the power of business publicity. A: Advertising and publicity are both necessary in your business marketing mix.  The key is to create a plan and strategy to ensure all of your efforts are working together. Here’s a clip from my TV interview on ABC Newswatch 12 KDRV about the workshop that offers some golden nuggets you can apply in your business right away.  Click the video to watch and see more quick tips below. During the workshop at SOU-SBDC I promised to share how to: • Discern the difference […]

There are five KEY elements to business success, growth and seizing opportunity. 1. Have a BIG vision and clear intentions for the outcome 2. Take inspired action 3. Get help 4. Follow through 5. Leverage the outcome to support your BIG vision Here’s the rub. Often we overlook opportunity because we are not thinking BIG enough, we’re not clear about our intended outcome or we simply don’t take action. AND we don’t think beyond what “appears” to be possible (think about that for a minute and you might even want to journal about it…). Here’s a specific example that might help you seize future opportunities. The California Women’s Conference offered their first Virtual Stage competition in celebration of the 29th CWC. The Virtual Stage is the brainchild of Michelle Patterson and designed to offer individualized resources, conversation […]

As we learn and grow as people and especially as professionals, it’s important to use discernment in everything we do. Often this means trusting when something is a clear YES or a clear NO (even if, at first, it seemed like a good idea). It all comes down to business boundaries. There are several telltale signs that something will be a good fit (or not). I’ve learned to trust my intuition, give myself permission to course correct and do so without explanation (because often the explanation is a form of coaching someone who already isn’t a good fit for your BIG vision and work-style). It takes time and practice to incorporate clear business BOUNDARIES. Sometimes we have to make tough decisions based on time commitments, return on investment, unnecessary hoops (i.e. business boundaries and etiquette), and reciprocal […]

Is speaking part of your business model? If it isn’t, you might want to consider speaking about your area of expertise. Speaking can add additional revenue streams to your business. In fact, speaking can help you personally connect with prime prospects who are ready to become paying customers.  It’s up to you to decide how you’re going to incorporate speaking into your business model (or if it even makes sense for you). You’ll also want to consider the  type of speaking engagement that best fits your delivery style.  Do you like to deliver keynotes, breakout sessions, interactive presentations, workshops, seminars or something else? More importantly what do people respond to when you deliver your message? It doesn’t matter if you’re presenting to a local organization, doing a media interview, a paid speaking gig or a telesummit,  there are basic […]

Your website is one of your most powerful marketing tools. If it isn’t building relationships, getting clients and making money there really isn’t a reason to have an online presence.  At the same time having a website is not all it takes to succeed online.  When creating an online presence there are three foundational marketing pieces that I recommend. These core components are essential to creating a successful marketing plan and succeeding online.  I’ve found that having just one of these in place is not enough. 1) Your Copywriting Action Plan determines what you need to write. It’s where you outline the content you need and plan the creation of your content (you’ll also want to be familiar with copywriting tips and techniques to truly connect with your ideal clients). 2) Your Content Strategy Plan (this is […]

Often clients come to me because they truly want to get the recognition they deserve in the form of publicity both online and in the media. They’re looking for a starting point to get the word out so they have a general understanding of press releases and strategies. This is an important step in building your brand awareness and increasing credibility. At the same time there are often key foundational pieces missing. Pieces that need to be in place before you really start creating publicity buzz. And, I’m always upfront about that. It’s important to be ready for publicity because publicity is more valuable than paid advertising and it’s more believable. This means that the right publicity can bring you more customers and create immediate trust. It can also be the most cost effective way to build […]

Inevitably there will come a time where publicity needs to be a part of your marketing mix. You may opt for mainstream media publicity or Internet publicity. Either way, you need a solid platform to promote yourself and to be accessible when publicity opportunities come your way. Often clients will contact me to invest in press release writing services. While I’m always happy to help (I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, writing press releases), I do have to ask some questions to make sure this isn’t a waste of their time or mine. First, you  need to have a strategy. If there is no strategy in place then we first need to make sure the press release goals are clear before we get started. We also need to make sure the business is ready for publicity. If there is […]

Once you’ve determined that you have something to say to the press or specific online prospects, you’ll want to issue a press release or news release in accordance to your overall press release strategy. Press releases are relatively simple to write. However, there is a specific formula that you must use or you could damage your credibility. Plus, it cannot be sales-y. Your press release must actually contain news, which by definition is previously unknown information. Many media outlets prefer 2-3 weeks advance notice to cover an event. At the same time, the Internet has greatly changed the way releases are distributed and has opened new areas of opportunity. You can distribute your message online much faster. Often online distribution sites also circulate to specific newswire services. When compiling your press release information, keep the following in […]
