Practice Makes Perfect….

I’ve got a little secret to share. Right in the middle of some pretty tight deadlines for projects, I gave myself a two hour break to play.

I hadn’t been on the course for over a month and I was starting to miss it. Plus, I had hit a creative roadblock that could only be unblocked by hacking the ball around a bit (within two hours you can usually finish 9 holes…just in case you’re not a golfer).

The first shot off the tee was sweet! I definitely had the wind in my favor. The rest of my shots, well, let’s just say it showed that I hadn’t been practicing. There was a lot of hacking going on.

John asked me if I planned to join the ladies association this year to help hone my game and I told him I’d think about it. He casually mentioned it might help my game. And when I was getting really frustrated and thinking about yelling four letter words like “GOLF!!!”, John politely pointed out that I couldn’t really expect to do exceptionally well if I only play once a month.

I managed to get a round of golf in with my sister-in-law over Thanksgiving break.
It’s actually become a tradition now. Robyn flies home from Dallas every year to spend the holidays with family. When she arrives, she has her clubs in tow.

We usually go out as a group but this year, Robyn and I literally had the course to ourselves. And, I have to admit it was a really fun and relaxing round of golf. This could be why I did better than usual…. (more…)

Time for Tee~

I have to admit that it’s way past Tee time for me. I haven’t been on the course for over a month now. I’m a little frightened about what that will do to my game, which wasn’t too impressive (yet) anyway. I’ve just been way too busy working on my business game. I’m teaching another training seminar for the Idaho Small Business Development Center and I’ve been concentrating on developing content that will help catapult business success for the attendees.  (more…)

After returning from my five day stint in Redondo Beach, California, I was missing the links. September drizzles couldn’t keep me off the course. John and I decided to sneak in 9 and am I ever glad I did. Not only did the fresh air and cleansing rain invigorate, I got my first birdie. (more…)

What Does Golf Have To Do With Business? ~

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

After posting my first article in the “On the Green” category of my blog, I’ve been asked by a few readers “What does golf have to do with business?”

I believe it has a lot to do with business even though I’m not a golfer who regularly conducts business on the green. Here’s what I mean. I’m obviously not part of the good ole’ boys network. Inviting potential clients for a round of golf and a cigar probably isn’t going to land me any new jobs.

Golf is a sport. It’s challenging and stimulating and for me. It’s a great way to clear my head and get the creative juices flowing.

At this point, I don’t plan golf outings with clients to try to bond. I find discussing business while golfing can be a bit distracting. Plus, my work speaks for itself. If I want to impress, I direct people to my webstite or schedule a meeting. But I do use the time on the course wisely and it helps my business. (more…)

My First Tournament~

Here’s a little background about my golf prowess or in reality my lack thereof. I’m not extremely athletic and have never played sports well.

I tried little league when I a was kid but the carsickness dilemma kind of put a damper on that. To say my middle name is not “grace” is at times a gross understatement. None the less, I’ve taken a liking to golf. This is really rather ironic because up until about three years ago, I thought the entire idea of chasing a little white ball around the course for four hours was, well, ridiculous. I simply didn’t get it.

My newfound interest really boils down to the old saying “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”  My husband is an avid golfer and he introduced me to the sport. Not only is he an avid golfer, he’s good. This year he made his first hole in one and yesterday he shot a 68. Plus, my brother in law Scott Manyon is a golf pro (no family pressure here). (more…)
