What Typo, Mom?
Last month I sent out a special announcement about the Red Hot Communications live event.
I proofed it once, I proofed it twice and I sent it on its merry way.
Moments after it was sent, my mom emailed me. She wanted to know if my Communications Director had proofed it because there was a typo.
Okay, so I may be too old to get grounded for not doing my homework but mom was on to something. I had made a mistake and the mistake was all my own.
I was excited and in a hurry to share great information with you. In my haste, I skipped the vital step of having my work double checked by another set of eyes.
My point, no matter how good you are, you cannot and should not do it all alone. The bottom line is when you are so close to your own writing you really need others to take a look at it. It’s a proven fact that as we are writing, we know what we mean to write (or type) and even if we make an error, chances are when we go back and proof, we will read it as we intended to write it.
So, admittedly, I am not perfect.
No one is.
But we are responsible for our own mistakes and it is up to us to do the best we can to avoid making them. In the future, I will slow down, have my Communications Director proof my work and then send it on its merry way to your inbox.
Until then, acknowledge your own mistakes and do what you can to correct them or at the very least make sure they aren’t repeated.
