Personally, I love to give credit where credit is due. A job well done, a kind thought or gesture, good deeds and overall ethics and integrity are qualities that merit recognition. I also value diversity and honor different points of view. After all, it is our own unique imprint that we leave on the hearts of people we touch that leave lasting impressions. This is true professionally and personally. It just is what it is.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to meet my friend and colleague Viki Viertel aka www.thebusinessbuddha.com in Palm Springs. We decided to pow wow in the desert to get some work done. In fact, Viki and I are working on a really cool project but I cannot tell you about it yet…

When I arrived, Viki said, “Hey, have you seen Cat’s e-newsletter yet?” (more…)

Read On ~ Book Review ~ Demystifying Website Marketing

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

By: Lisa Manyon www.writeoncreative.com

It’s no secret that marketing on the Web takes more than just slapping up a website and hoping people will flock to your URL. Amazingly enough, I still run into clients who use as a haphazard method and believe they truly are marketing.

Now I have an expert resource I recommend so clients easily understand the components of Web marketing. My new secret weapon is Cat Seda’s latest book How to Win Sales and Influence Spiders ~Boosting Your Business and Buzz on the Web. Seda skillfully explains the playing field on the web, and she uses language that is easily understandable even to newbies.

Some of the key points, you’ll take away from this book are;

  • The big picture overview of search engine marketing and SEO
  • Step-by-step instructions on how to build links
  • A differentiation between black hat and white hat tactics on the web (Reminds me of Mad Magazine spy versus spy. There really is good and evil out there)
  • The good the bad and the ugly on squeeze pages
  • Social media networking

If any of the items on the bulleted list sound foreign to you, I encourage you to grab a copy of this book today (you can purchase it via Amazon by clicking here)! These are tips and tactics you’ll need a good firm grasp on when you begin your Web marketing efforts. You’ll discover when you read the book, but there’s a lot more to Web marketing than meets the eye.

Plus, Seda uses real world examples with the big players (Fire Mountain Gems & Entrepreneur just to name a couple) and and entrepreneurs. By illustrating how it’s really done and showcasing the results, Seda highlights exactly why Web marketing is so important.

As a writer and consultant, I was especially impressed with the example about article marketing to generate a six figure income from one project.

I’ve been following Seda’s work for some time via her articles in Entrepreneur Magazine. I also had the opportunity to meet her in person at Lorrie Morgan- Ferrero’s Speed Copywriting Workshop and for what it’s worth Cat Seda is the real deal. Her internet integrity is impressive, and when it comes right down to it, I’ll do business with the white hats any day. After all, who wants to deal with the spam police? Read this book and you’ll be on the right track.

John Carlton Finally Makes Me Cry… But It Isn’t during One of His Infamous Hot Seats!~

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

 By: Lisa Manyon www.writeoncreative.com

If you’re not familiar with John Carlton, he is an expert copywriter. I met him at Lorrie Morgan Ferrero’s Speed Copywriting event in Redondo Beach last year. She enticed him to make a rare, live appearance to share his expertise (Carlton is one of her mentors) and he certainly did make an impression.

I’m not going to pull any punches here. Carlton’s a controversial guy he likes to stir things up a bit. And as he gleefully proclaimed his intention was to make hot seat participants cry, there were certainly mixed emotions. Brash and unedited, participants, who were able to move past the hurt feelings, took his hard-hitting advice and greatly improved their writing techniques. Having his colleague, Brad Peterson, balance out the feedback was an added bonus.

I was one of the humbled hot seat survivors and while Carlton didn’t get the pleasure of making me cry then, reading his post about the late and great Gary Halbert did.

I never had the honor of meeting Gary Halbert although I’m certainly familiar with his work. I’ve heard nothing but phenomenal (and very colorful) things about this talented man. He is a great credit to the copywriting craft, and his timeless words will live on . The copywriting world will not be the same without him and my heart goes out to his personal friends and family.

Beware of Butter Knives, Cell-Phone Soup and the Difference Between Losing Your Right-Hand-Man and Not Being Able to Use Your Right Hand.

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

 By: Lisa Manyon www.writeoncreative.com

Talk to the handIf you are a frequent visitor to my blog, you’ve undoubtedly noticed my posts are not coming quite as regularly as they were before. Before March 14th that is.

Here’s a little back story …

I’d taken a few days off of work to get some things done around the house. In the process, I had a run in with a butter knife. Let’s just say that “grace” is not my middle name. While trying to pry wax out of a candle holder, my hand slipped and with great force my little finger came in contact with the blade of the butter knife.

If you’re squeamish, I might lose you here. So, to avoid that, I’ll make what could be a long story, a bit shorter and leave out most of the gory details.

I severed my tendon with the butter knife. I didn’t know it at the time but what I did know is that I needed to drive myself to Express Care ASAP (I thought of them first because I used to do all of the copywriting for their radio, TV, direct mail and print ads).

I made it to Express Care, despite the fact that I was about ready to faint at the sight of blood. Anyway, they stitched me up and sent me home even though I couldn’t move the top portion of my pinky. I thought that was strange but doctor knows best (after all, what real damage could a butter knife do?)… (more…)

Soul Soothing ~

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

There is nothing more soothing to the soul than good music. In fact, the tunes you choose can set the mood for the day. Check out this funky and fun album by AJ Croce ( remember Jim Croce who sang Leroy Brown? Well, AJ is his son and musical talents are a chip off the ole’ block with a completely different stye)

Be sure to click this link to check it out & take a listen. A.J. Croce
