Practice Makes Perfect….

I’ve got a little secret to share. Right in the middle of some pretty tight deadlines for projects, I gave myself a two hour break to play.
I hadn’t been on the course for over a month and I was starting to miss it. Plus, I had hit a creative roadblock that could only be unblocked by hacking the ball around a bit (within two hours you can usually finish 9 holes…just in case you’re not a golfer).
The first shot off the tee was sweet! I definitely had the wind in my favor. The rest of my shots, well, let’s just say it showed that I hadn’t been practicing. There was a lot of hacking going on.
John asked me if I planned to join the ladies association this year to help hone my game and I told him I’d think about it. He casually mentioned it might help my game. And when I was getting really frustrated and thinking about yelling four letter words like “GOLF!!!”, John politely pointed out that I couldn’t really expect to do exceptionally well if I only play once a month.
Point taken and of course it got me thinking about businesses again. Golf, like businesses, is a game of skill. The more you practice the better you get.
So, why then do people expect to get extraordinary results when they don’t put the time and effort into whatever it might be that they want to do well?
Let me know if you’ve got the answer. I’d really like to hear from you.
